Pondering Interests and Interviews

Image
During Episode 225 of the How Preschool Teachers Do It Podcast, we talked about asking families about the interests of their children and even asking the children.  Cindy and Alison agreed that questions about routines are helpful, but understanding what families know about their children's everyday interests is equally, if not more, valuable.  Asking children about their interests is also important but can be trickier. What questions might you ask young children about their interests that don't lead them toward an answer?  What questions have you asked families that drew out this sort of information about their children? Add your ideas in the comments!

Do you ever wonder what other early childhood professionals think about topics related to this podcast?  We hear from you, but you don't get to communicate with each other.  We are excited to offer you this "Ponder this" page on our website.  We hope that you will revisit ideas with us, let us know what you do or added to your practices, and, even more importantly, learn from and ask questions of each other.   For our first Ponder This, let's think about Episode 235 - "The Robot Preference."  In the episode, we discuss studies about whether children prefer human interactions or technology if the technology has the right answers. What do you think?  Do you prefer correct answers or human interaction? What do you want to encourage children to seek - humans who can make mistakes or technology that is always right? Put your thoughts in the comments!
